U.S. travel agency airfare sales up 69% in July year-over-year

ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) today released data showing that air ticket sales by ARC-accredited travel agencies totaled $6.8 billion in July 2022, a 69% year-over-year increase. the other compared to July 2021.* The average round-trip flight to the United States Travel ticket price was $555 in July 2022, up 21% from July 2021 and 8% lower than in June 2022. This is the second consecutive month of decline in the average ticket price.

Month after month, the July 2022 results showed:

  • Total sales decreased by 13%.

  • Total passenger trips down 8%.

  • US domestic travel fell 6%.

  • International travel fell by 10%.

“We’re seeing the average monthly ticket price drop earlier in the year than usual,” said Steve Solomon, chief commercial officer at ARC. “As for the rest of the year, we expect a continued increase in business travel as the summer vacation season draws to a close.”

The total number of passenger trips settled by the ARC in July 2022 increased by 18% year-on-year, from 16.8 million to 19.9 million, driven by a 50% increase in year-over-year international trips, which totaled 7 million. US domestic trips increased 6% to 12.8 million over the same period.

EMD sales increased 90% year over year to $13,610,107. EMD transactions increased 58% to 239,779 over the same period.**

  • Findings are based on monthly sales data ending July 31, 2022, from 10,657 U.S. retail and corporate travel agencies, satellite ticket printers and online travel agencies . Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines.

  • The average ticket price (USD) is for a round-trip ticket settled through ARC for an itinerary that included only domestic travel within the United States.

  • Passenger trips include the total number of passengers making a trip from one airport to another using direct or connecting flights. Newly issued trips are added and refunded trips are deducted to provide a clean view of passengers on the move.

  • US domestic passenger travel includes the total number settled through ARC when the itinerary is entirely within the US. International passenger trips include the total number settled through the ARC when all or part of the trip is to airports outside of the United States or originates from outside of the United States.

  • Total sales equals the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees.
