U.S. travel agency airline ticket sales in August more than doubled year-over-year

ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) today released data showing that air ticket sales by ARC-accredited travel agencies totaled $7.3 billion in August 2022, a 127% year-over-year increase on the other.* The average price of round-trip airline tickets to the United States fell for the third consecutive month, reaching $526. This average ticket price is a 5% drop from July 2022, but a 32% year-over-year increase.

Month after month, August 2022 results showed:

  • Total sales increased by 6%.

  • Total passenger journeys up 9%.

  • US domestic travel increased 11%.

  • International travel increased by 5%.

“Travellers have responded to lower airfares by buying plane tickets at a rate we don’t typically see at this time of year,” said Steve Solomon, chief commercial officer at ARC. “Leisure airline ticket sales exceeded pre-pandemic levels throughout August, while online travel agencies and business-focused travel agencies saw minor gains. ”

The total number of passenger trips settled by the ARC in August 2022 increased by 74% year-over-year, from 15.2 million to 21.7 million. U.S. domestic travel rose 30% year-over-year to 14.2 million, and international travel rose 74% to 7.4 million over the same period.

EMD sales increased 116% year over year to $13,755,346. EMD transactions increased 92% to 248,821 over the same period.**

  • Findings are based on monthly sales data ending August 31, 2022, from 10,642 U.S. retail and corporate travel agencies, satellite ticket printers and online travel agencies . Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines.

  • The average ticket price (USD) is for a round-trip ticket settled through ARC for an itinerary that included only domestic travel within the United States.

  • Passenger trips include the total number of passengers making a trip from one airport to another using direct or connecting flights. Newly issued trips are added and refunded trips are deducted to provide a clean view of passengers on the move.

  • US domestic passenger travel includes the total number settled through ARC when the itinerary is entirely within the US. International passenger trips include the total number settled through the ARC when all or part of the trip is to airports outside of the United States or originates from outside of the United States.

  • Total sales equals the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees.
