US sanctions 3 Lebanese and their travel agency for alleged links with Hezbollah — Naharnet
The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Tuesday designated three “Hezbollah-linked financial facilitators and their Lebanon-based travel agency,” the Treasury said in a statement.
Specifically, OFAC appointed Adel Diab, Ali Mohamad Daoun, Jihad Salem Alame and their company, Dar Al Salam for Travel & Tourism.
“This action comes at a time when the Lebanese economy is facing an unprecedented crisis and when Hezbollah, as a member of the Lebanese government, is blocking economic reforms and hindering much-needed changes for the Lebanese people,” the official said. Treasury in a press release.
Hezbollah’s “extensive network of financial facilitators has helped the group tap into Lebanon’s financial resources and survive the current economic crisis.” Thanks to businessmen such as those named today, Hezbollah is accessing material and financial support through the legitimate commercial sector to finance its acts of terrorism and its attempts to destabilize the political institutions of Lebanon”, adds the communicated.
The designations of the three individuals and their company “demonstrate the Treasury’s continued efforts to target Hezbollah’s continued attempts to exploit the global financial sector and evade sanctions,” the statement said.
“With this action, the Treasury is disrupting businessmen who raise and launder funds for Hezbollah’s destabilizing activities as the Lebanese people face worsening economic and humanitarian crises,” the Treasury Undersecretary said. Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Officer Brian E. Nelson.
“Hezbollah claims it supports the Lebanese people, but like other corrupt actors in Lebanon that the Treasury has designated, Hezbollah continues to profit from isolated business ventures and backhanded political deals, amassing wealth that the Lebanese people never see,” Nelson added.
The Treasury described Adel Diab as a “Hezbollah operative and Lebanese businessman who used his business to raise funds for Hezbollah and facilitate Hezbollah activities.”
“Diab owns assets jointly with Ali Al Sha’ir, assistant to Hezbollah fundraiser Hasib Muhammad Hadwan, a member of the Hezbollah General Secretariat, who works with Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. Al-Sha’ir and Hadwan were both designated by OFAC in 2021 for their Hezbollah-related activities. Diab is designated pursuant to EO 13224, as amended, for having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material or technological support, or goods or services to or in support of Hezbollah,” the Treasury added.
Ali Mohamad Daoun is a Hezbollah official who is “in charge of Hezbollah’s second district”.
Daoun and Jihad Salem Alame are designated for having “materially assisted, sponsored or provided financial, material or technological support, or goods or services to or in support of Hezbollah”, the Treasury said.
Diab, Daoun and Alame are together “the founders and partners of Dar Al Salam for Travel & Tourism, a Lebanon-based travel agency which they own and operate”, the Treasury added.
